JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Samford outscored Jacksonville 27-17 in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome a slow start, and the Bulldogs fell 52-41 Saturday at Swisher Gymnasium.
Jacksonville outscored the Bulldogs 28-15 in the paint and shot 51 percent for the game. Samford, on the other hand, shot just 26 percent for the game, including 24 percent in the decisive first half.
After tying the game 2-2 with 19:30 left in the first half, Samford went cold. The Bulldogs went 6:55 without scoring and trailed 12-2 before Noot Pittman's put-back with 12:35 remaining in the first half. The Dolphins continued to dominate offensively throughout the rest of the half, with Katie McDonald and Kat Sungy each scoring 10 points. The Dolphins shot 65.2 percent in the first half, compared to Samford's 24 percent. Jacksonville made 3-of-5 from behind the three-point line in the half, while the Bulldogs were 0-9.
The Bulldogs fought back valiantly in the second half, and even held the Dolphins without a point for the final 6:40 of the game, but the damage had been done.
Junior Giovanni Price led Samford with 13 points, including nine in the second half. Senior Noot Pittman led the Bulldogs with six rebounds. Jacksonville was led in scoring by Sungy, with 16 points.
JU improved to 5-15, 3-6 A-Sun, while the Bulldogs dropped to 5-15, 1-8 A-Sun.
