Women's Golf Finishes 11th at JSU

March 18, 2003

GLENCOE, Ala. - Jacksonville State shot school-record low round of 295 to finish with a total score of 613 on Tuesday to win the Chris Banister Gamecock Classic at the par-72, 5,935-yard Silver Lakes Golf Course on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Samford finished 11th out of 13 teams. Tricia Harlow was the top Bulldog. Competing as an individual, Kelly Villarreal shot 83-81 (164) and finished in a tie for 23rd. Villarreal will rejoin the Bulldog lineup next week.

"We showed some improvement from yesterday to today," said coach Ian Thompson. "We turn our attention now to our tournament next week. Timberline is a golf course our players are very familiar with, we have an excellent field of teams and there is good weather in the forecast. Those elements should add up to an outstanding collegiate golf tournament."

Samford and 17 other teams, including seven Alabama schools, will compete March 24-25 at Timberline Golf Course in Calera, in the Samford Invitational presented by Applebee's.

As for the just completed tournament, Jax State placed four players in the top six as the Gamecocks won by 16 shots over defending champion Murray State's total of 629. Oral Roberts finished third at 632 followed by Birmingham-Southern (643) and fifth place Bradley's score of 648.

JSU's Angie Green and Shanelle Howell each finished at 153 to tie for fourth.

Middle Tennessee State finished sixth at 648, followed by Western Illinois (659), Eastern Kentucky (679), Jackson State (683) and Troy State finished tenth with a total of 689 in the 13-field event.

Murray State's Lee-Anne Pace won medallist honors after shooting a 74 for a 36-hole total of 150 to finish two shots ahead of Birmingham-Southern's Shelley McGraw (75-77) and Oral Roberts' Brooke Finchers (75-77) total of 152.
