BRISTOL, Va.-- Samford University pitcher Ehren Wassermann signed a free agent minor league contract with the Bristol White Sox on Tuesday after being scouted at the White Sox tryout at the Hoover Met last month.
Wassermann was one of over 100 players at the tryout and was one of two that were contacted by the White Sox afterwards. The right-hander from Sylacauga, Ala., converted seven saves and recorded 130 strikeouts in 172 innings for the Bulldogs in two seasons. He was 6-3 with a 4.04 ERA as a junior and 5-8 with a 6.25 ERA for Samford last season.
Wassermann joins the Bristol White Sox of the Appalachian League, the Single-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. He will join the team on Wednesday as it begins a three-game series against the Burlington Bees in Burlington, N.C. Bristol is 19-9 heading into play on Wednesday.
Wassermann becomes the second Samford player to sign a professional contract this summer joining Robert Evans who is batting .250 for the Lowell Spinners in the NY-Penn League.
