Baseball Begins Fall Season

Sept. 11, 2003

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford University baseball team started its fall season last Tuesday, September 2, and will conclude the fall on September 27. Head Coach Tim Parenton welcomes two new members to his coaching staff for the start of fall practice. Jeff Newman and Jeramie Moore join the staff this season.

"Starting the fall with two new coaches, everything is new," Parenton said. "They're implementing their pitching and hitting philosophies, along with their fielding philosophies. Jeff Newman will handle our pitchers and Jeramie Moore will handle the hitting and the infielders. So, the guys are getting to know them, and they're getting to know the guys.

"In the fall, what we want to do is evaluate," Parenton said. "We want to play a lot of games, take a lot of ground balls and a lot of batting practice. We won't do a lot of teaching as far as the team stuff, but we'll do a lot of individual work. We'll go four weeks, and at the end of the four weeks, we hope to have our starting lineup intact and our top pitchers ready to go."

Parenton said the four days of work the team had last week were a tryout for new players. The team practiced the first two days and then played games the last two days. This week, he added, the team has started the actual practices of the fall season.

The Bulldogs will wrap the fall up with the annual Parents' Day on September 27. The team will scrimmage at 1:00 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field, which will be followed by a dinner for the players and parents.
