BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Samford Bulldogs finished up preparations for their second game of the season. Samford will take on West Alabama Thursday night in Seibert Stadium. The Bulldogs practiced for just over two hours on the practice fields on the campus of Samford University working on team drills and continuing to try and perfect the kicking game.
"We did not have the best of practices today," Bulldogs Head Coach Bill Gray said. "I just hope when the lights come on Thursday night they will be ready to play. It still remains to be seen if we have fixed the mistakes from the Chattanooga game last week. If you look at the preparation for this week compared to last week, I don't know if we got as much done this week as we did at this time last week."
The Bulldogs are still trying to figure out who their kicker will be for the game against West Alabama and Coach Gray said it will be a game time decision. Gray also understands the hunger and talent that the Tigers will bring into Seibert Stadium.
"We have to have a guy step forward in the kicking game and we won't make a decision until Thursday on that," Gray said following practice. "I am concerned about the explosiveness of their offense and we have to make sure we play a solid and sound defense, because they can take advantage of you. They have a junior and senior leading their defense and I hope that we can put a whole game together, we came out strong last week and kind of fell off in the second half."
Former Auburn All-Americian Bryon Franklin spoke with the team before the practice.
It will be the first meeting between the two teams since 1989, when then Livingston defeated Samford, 35-28. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Seibert Stadium and can be heard locally on 91.1 FM. The Bulldogs are off next week before traveling to San Diego to play Division I-A San Diego State on September 20.
