BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford sophomore defensive back and kick returner Cortland Finnegan was named the Special Teams Player of the Week by the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) on Sunday.

In last week's 44-28 victory over West Alabama, Finnegan returned four kicks for 203 yards, including an 89-yard return for a touchdown in the first quarter. Finnegan currently leads the OVC in kick return average, as he has averaged 40.9 yards on his seven returns so far this season.

Finnegan and the Bulldogs will take this week off from competition. The team will next play on September 20, when they play at Division I-A San Diego State.
