BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The White team defeated the Blue team, 42-38, in the Samford women's basketball team's annual intrasquad scrimmage Saturday morning at Seibert Hall.
"I thought overall it went well," Samford head coach Mike Morris said of the scrimmage. "Our effort was good and our execution was pretty good. The only negative is that we took some bad shots, which is typical in a scrimmage. I was pleased with the way our seniors and freshmen played, so, overall, I think it was a productive hour.
"I thought A.J. (Andrea Ward) played well," Morris said. "A.J. got a lot of loose balls, made some shots and some good decisions. I thought Che' (Walker) played well as well. MaKenzie (Spruiell), as a freshman, came in and made some good shots. That's very encouraging to have someone step up and score like that. One of our points of emphasis is that we have to have people, other than Chelsee (Insell) and Alex (Munday), to step up and score."
The White team led most of the first half, and led by as much as eight points at 18-10. The Blue team, however, answered with a 9-0 run to take a 19-18 lead late in the first half. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the first half, and the score was tied at 25-25 at halftime.
The Blue team scored the first five points of the second half to take a 30-25 lead. The White team then came back with a 12-0 run to take a 37-30 lead. The Blue team cut the lead to three at 39-36, but could get no closer as the White team came away with the 42-38 win.
Sarah Clement led all scorers with 12 points. Cora Beth Smith and LaBrena Friend scored 10 points each. Andrea Ward scored nine points, while MaKenzie Spruiell scored eight points and Alex Munday and Che' Walker added seven points apiece.
The Bulldogs will open the 2004-05 season on Nov. 19, when they play host to Jacksonville. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at Seibert Hall.
