JACKSONVILLE, Ala. -
The Samford University women's basketball team will play at arch-rival Jacksonville State on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
Samford enters the game with a record of 9-16 overall and 2-12 in the Ohio Valley Conference after a 57-39 loss at home to Tennessee Tech on Saturday. Jacksonville State is currently 15-9 overall and 9-5 in the OVC after a 66-64 win over league-leading Austin Peay on Saturday.
Tuesday's game will mark the 16th meeting between Samford and Jacksonville State in women's basketball, making the Gamecocks Samford's most played opponent. JSU leads the series 9-6, and the two teams met earlier this season, with Jax State defeating Samford, 70-68, on Jan. 6, in Samford's Seibert Hall. The two programs first played on Jan. 22, 1998, a 72-57 Gamecock win in Jacksonville, Ala. Samford and Jacksonville State have played every season since Samford started its women's basketball program in the 1997-98 season.
Alex Munday is currently leading Samford in scoring (14.6 ppg.), and rebounding (5.8 rpg.). Cora Beth Smith leads the team in assists with 76 and steals with 28. Chelsee Insell leads in three-pointers made (56) and three-pointers attempted (122). Insell and freshman Veronica Pike share the team lead in free throws made with 49.
