Samford: Samford (11-14, 6-8) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 74-69 victory over Tennessee Tech on Saturday and clinched a berth in the upcoming Ohio Valley Conference tournament. The Bulldogs are currently tied for the sixth spot in the conference standing but with two games remaining Samford can move up as high as fifth. J. Robert Merritt found his shooting touch against Tennessee Tech on Saturday. The sophomore was 6-of-10 behind the arc while Tyson Dorsey was 5-of-10 from long range. Samford shot 11-of-16 for 69 percent from long range in the second half to claim the victory. The Bulldogs continue to lead the OVC in free throw shooting in conference games hitting 75 percent of their free throws. Phillip Ramelli has made 44 of his last 50 free throws for 88 percent.
Jacksonville State: The Gamecocks (12-13, 5-9) snapped a four-game losing streak with their victory over Tennessee Tech on Thursday. JSU needs a win to remain a game ahead of Eastern Illinois and SEMO for the eighth and final tournament spot. Trent Eager leads the team in scoring at 13.4 points per game and rebounding at 5.7 per game. He had a team-high 17 points in the first meeting at Samford. All five JSU starters average in double figures. The Gamecocks are only averaging 17.4 points per game from their bench.
Inside Stuff: Samford has won two of the last three meetings after defeating JSU 58-48 in Birmingham on Jan. 6. The Bulldogs have dropped the last two meetings in Jacksonville but still hold a 44-35 edge in the series that dates back to 1921. JSU is Samford's third most played opponent all-time.
