Box Score
Daytona Beach, Fla. -
The Samford softball team shutout Iona, 1-0, in the first game of the day on Saturday, but fell to tournament host Bethune-Cookman, 8-3 in game two.
The Bulldogs are now 6-18 for the season and 2-2 in the tournament. Samford defeated Liberty, 8-0 in six innings, on Friday before falling to Harvard, 3-2, in extra innings.
In game one, junior Kelly Smith hit an RBI triple to right field in the sixth inning to score Abi Casillo and give Samford the 1-0 lead. Freshman pitcher Susanna Meyer threw a three-hit shutout and struck out seven batters to lead the Bulldogs to a victory over Iona. The shutout was the first of her career.
Against Bethune-Cookman, Shelley Stanley had an RBI single in the first inning that scored Trisha Holman, who was hit by a pitch to reach base. It was not until the sixth inning that the Bulldogs scored again. Casillo had a hit, and Stanley picked up her second RBI of the game with a double to send Casillo home. Jenna Dempski then hit a ball that the shortstop misplayed and allowed Stanley to score. But the three runs were not enough, and Samford lost, 8-3.
The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday against Radford at 9 a.m. for their final game of the tournament.
