CHAMPS Program Concludes With Financial Planning Talk

April 30, 2004

Samford student-athletes gathered in Brock Forum for the final presentation of the 2004 NCAA Champs/Life Skills program Thursday. The workshop was presented by Bill Service, a professor in Samford's school of business, and featured advice on financial planning and education.

Dr. Service addressed credit card debt, investment strategies and how to plan for retirement in an entertaining hour-plus session. With several of the student-athletes in attendance nearing graduation, Service made a point to compare athletic training and physical fitness to financial planning and fiscal responsibility.

"It takes a goal, discipline and the ability to keep going to succeed athletically," said Service. "The same principles can be applied to your financial life. By planning today, you can put yourself in the position to make your own decisions in the future."

Service's presentation was full of colorful examples from his own life, from stories about his guitar collection to his prized Mustang automobile. Service challenged the students to take control of their financial futures by saving, investing and allocating, so that one day they can have financial freedom.

Service likened a solid financial planning to a three-legged stool, with cash, debt and equity comprising the legs. Mutual funds and bonds are some things that Service recommended beginners consider. Of course, Service recommended researching extensively before making any investment.
