COLLEGE STATION, Tex. - The Samford volleyball team (0-3) lost both games against McNeese State and Georgia Southern on Friday, Sept. 3 at the McDonald's/ Texas A&M Invitational at G. Rollie Coliseum. Friday morning, the Bulldogs lost to Cowgirls, 3-0, while that evening also defeated by the Eagles, 3-1.
GAME 1:
In the first match, the Bulldogs recorded nine kills, six errors, eight team blocks with 16 block assists. McNeese State finished the first match with 15 kills, ten errors, four service aces, two team blocks with four block assists. Bulldogs lose this match 30-21.
Ending the second match, Samford fell to McNeese State again, 30-12, finishing this match with seven kills, nine errors, nine-team blocks with 18 block assists. The Cowgirls prevailed to be the winner of this match with 15 kills, ten errors and eight service aces.
To finish with the third match, the Cowgirls took the game with a score of 30-22. Samford completed the game with a total of 27 kills, 26 errors, one service ace, 12 team blocks with 24 block assists.
GAME 2:
The Bulldogs went into an evening game against Georgia Southern with an overall record of 0-2, after losing to the Cowgirls 3-0 this morning.
In match one, the Bulldogs and Eagles stayed kneck-to-kneck, tying the score 10 times, while changing the lead five times. Georgia Southern managed to out score at the end, winning this match 30-28. Samford finished the match with 13 kills, five errors, one team block and two block assists, while the Eagles posted 15 kills and eight errors.
During the second match, Samford once again was leading then trailing the Eagles, with lots of defense on both sides. Samford tied the Eagles 11 times and recorded six lead changes during this match, but Georgia Southern maintained their winning ways, finishing the match 30-26. The Bulldogs recorded 16 kills, six errors, two team blocks with two block assists.
To start the third, Samford brought the "BULLDOG" to this match determined to bring things around. Going into the end of the match, Samford led (26-24), with Georgia Southern bringing the defense on strong. It continued to be kneck-to-kneck for both teams, while Samford's defense held strong and made their first match win of the 2004 season, finishing with a score 30-28. The Bulldogs recorded 20 kills with an attack percentage of .326.
Going into the fourth match, the Bulldogs were excited and managed to lead at the beginning with a score of 4-1. The Eagles seemed determined to turn things around by eventually tying the score, 9-9. It was once again, kneck-to-kneck throughout the remainder of this match as the Eagles took the lead (25-21), but the Bulldogs offense tied the score and both teams remained with a two-point difference. The Eagles took this game with a score of 34-32. Samford finished the game with an overall total of 62 kills, 28 errors, nine team blocks with 14 block assists.
Samford will continue competition tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 4, at the McDonald's/ Texas A&M Invitational as they play against UCLA at 10:30am.
