BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Samford University's Crystal Royall garnered yet another prestigious postseason accolade on Monday as the Bulldogs' senior goalkeeper was named to the Third Team of the Soccer Buzz All-Southeast Region.
The most decorated athlete in Samford soccer history, Royall has already earned Third-Team Academic All-American honors this postseason and was recently named a First-Team NSCAA South Region Scholar All-American.
Royall, who became the first person in Ohio Valley Conference history to be named both Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in 2004, was one of 13 people named to Soccer Buzz's third team on Monday. With the honor, she joins an elite list of some of the nation's top players.
The best players and coaches of the 2004 women's college soccer season were recognized on Jan. 10, as Soccer Buzz announced its annual awards for the Southeast Region.
A total of 50 schools comprising the Southeast Region were eligible for Buzz awards, which have been presented since 1996. The awards were decided on by a vote open to all Division I head coaches and Soccer Buzz staff.
Samford's Royall, a senior from Richmond, Va., finished her illustrious four-year career with a stellar 3.67 grade point average in physical education and is the team's all-time leader in both goals against average and shutouts.
During the 2004 season, Royall registered a conference-best seven shutouts and limited her opponents to a stingy 0.64 goals against average. She only allowed 11 goals on the season and compiled an impressive .867 save percentage.
North Carolina's Lori Chalupny kept a long string of Tar Heel honors alive as the junior was named Southeast Region Player of the Year. She follows last year's winner, Lindsay Tarpley, and became the ninth-consecutive UNC player to win or share the region's top player award.
Chalupny's 17 points helped North Carolina finish the 2004 season with a 20-1-2 overall record as the midfielder led her team in shots and was crucial in keeping the Tar Heels competitive after losing star Tarpley to a broken leg.
After guiding her squad to a 17-4-2 record, Amanda Cromwell of Central Florida was honored as the Southeast Region Coach of the Year.
The Golden Knights received an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships after losing the Atlantic Sun title in a shootout and went on to upset Florida in the first round of the national tournament.
The Samford University soccer team finished the 2004 campaign with a 10-7-1 overall record and earned its second-straight OVC regular-season championship.
