BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Samford baseball team will open Ohio Valley Conference play with a home series against in-state rival Jacksonville State this weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Samford enters the series with a record of 4-13, and the Bulldogs are coming off an 8-2 loss to Dayton on Wednesday. Jacksonville State is currently 7-11 after a 5-3 loss at Alabama on Wednesday.
Chandler Tidwell will start Friday's game on the mound. Tidwell is currently 1-3 with a 6.55 ERA on the season. Stephen Artz will start the second game, bringing in a record of 0-3 and an ERA of 6.47. For the third game of the series, the starter is scheduled to be Joseph Edens. Edens is currently 2-1 with a 4.81 ERA.
Statistically, John Morgan leads the team with a .433 batting average. Justin Worthington leads the team in hits with 21, and is second on the squad with a .368 batting average. Matt Alling leads the team with three home runs and 18 RBI.
This weekend will wrap up Samford's eight-game homestand. The Bulldogs are 2-3 on the current homestand with two wins over Butler, as well as a loss to Butler and two losses to Dayton.
The teams will play a single game Friday night at 6:00 p.m., and a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. All three games can be heard worldwide on the internet at www.samfordsports.com, and the first two games can be heard locally on WVSU-FM 91.1.
