Men's Golf Heads To First NCAA Regional Championships, Thursday-Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The 2005 OVC Men's Golf Champions will compete at the 2005 NCAA West Regional Championships on Thursday-Saturday, May 19-21. The competition will be hosted by Stanford University at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif. Tee times are TBA. All results will be posted at www.samfordsports.com once received from the NCAA office and/or the hosting institution.

For the 2004-05 Samford University men's golf team made Bulldog history after winning its first-ever OVC Championship, while earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Regionals.

Samford finished the regular season ranked 106th in the nation, according to the Golfstat Rankings, with a stroke average of 260, while finishing the season with two first-place wins, three runner-up finishes and six more top-five finishes.

For the 2004 fall season, the Bulldogs opened the season with two third-place finishes at the Buffalo Rock/Birmingham-Southern Showdown and Sea Trails/Elon College Tournament.

For October, Samford stepped it up and took two runner-up titles at the Greg Palmer Eagle Classic and F&M Bank/APSU Intercollegiate.

The Bulldogs ended fall competition with a fourth-place finish at the Troy Invitational, while ranking 100th in the nation with an impressive stroke average of 290, just two over par.

In 2005 spring competition, Samford began the season by hosting the traditional Samford Intercollegiate. The Bulldogs finished in second place with Bradley Farmer named to the all-tournament team, as Belmont took the crown for the event.

In March, Samford tied for fifth place with University of Iowa at the Emerald Coast Collegiate, while placing fifth at the Grub Mart/Jacksonville State Intercollegiate.

For April, the Bulldogs finished in fourth place at the Eastern Kentucky Spring Invitational, while taking the crown at the Troy Spring Invitational with Nathan Turner as the individual champion for the event.

The Samford men's team ended the regular season with its first-ever conference win at the OVC Championships. Farmer finished as the OVC MVP/Individual champion and earned All-OVC First team honors, while Turner, Andrew Villarreal and Ryan Mayberry were also named to the All-OVC First team.

If the No. 25 seeded Bulldog team finish in the top 10 for regionals, Samford will automatically advance to its first-ever NCAA Championship competition, Wednesday-Saturday, June 1-4. The competition will be hosted by Loyola College at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland.
