Samford Track And Field Trio Set For NCAA Mideast Regionals, Friday-Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Lauren Blankenship, Jessica Brewer and Michael Smith will represent the 2005 Samford Track and Field team at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships on Friday-Saturday, May 27-28. The competition will take place at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex, located on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. The meet is set for a noon start both days with live results posted at www.iuhoosiers.com. Complete results will also be posted at www.samfordsports.com once received from the hosting school.

Lauren Blankenship will compete in the women's 5000m run at the 2005 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships this weekend.


Blankenship will compete in the women's 5000m run, while J. Brewer will run in the women's 3000m steeplechase, and Smith will compete in the 400m intermediate hurdles.

Blankenship and J. Brewer automatically qualified for the 2005 NCAA Mideast Regionals after taking the OVC crown in their individual events, while Smith hit his NCAA qualifying mark after placing second in his individual conference event.

At the 2005 OVC Championships, Blankenship won the 5000m run with a time of 17:14.35, while J. Brewer took the crown in the 3000m steeplechase (11:08.35) and Smith placed second overall in the men's 400m hurdles with a NCAA Regional qualifying time of 51.90.

Jessica Brewer will run in the women's 3000m steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships this weekend.


As for regionals, the top five finishers in each event will automatically qualify for the 2005 NCAA Championships, while all other athletes finishing in spots six through eight at the regional competition will provisionally qualify for the NCAAs and wait for the NCAA office to approve entry into final event.

All teams and individuals advancing to the 2005 NCAA Championships will battle at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif., June 8-11. The competition will be hosted by Sacramento State and the Sacramento Sports Commission. Meet times are TBA.
