TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- The Samford University Women's Golf Team stands in 12th place out of 16 teams following the first round of competition at the Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate.
The Bulldogs totaled a score of 323 following the conclusion of the first round of the 54-hole Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate on Sunday, shooting 35 over par on the Ol Colony Golf Course.
"It hasn't been a bad first day, especially in such a high caliber day," said Samford head coach Ian Thompson. "This is a tough course and there's a lot of tough competition. This is definitely the hardest tournament we'll play in all year."
Currently Augusta State leads the field in the team competition with a total score of 297, just nine strokes over par. Host Alabama is in second place with a 298 (+10) followed by Middle Tennessee State with a 304 (+16), Birmingham Southern in fourth with a 306 (+18) and North Carolina Wilmington in fifth place after shooting 308, 20 strokes over par.
Ohio Valley Conference foe Jacksonville State is currently tied for seventh with Mississippi State and Memphis, as all three teams tallied a score of 313 (+25). Samford currently leads Murray State, another OVC rival, who stands in 13th place with a score of 326 (+38).
In the individual competition, freshman Maria Troche leads Samford with a score of 76, just four strokes over par. She shot a 38 on both the front and back nine holes. Troche is tied for 12th place with Jamey Dillard of Middle Tennessee State, Katie Davidson of Ole Miss, Christi Baron of Murray State, Cameron Barber of Memphis and Emilie Geury of Augusta State.
"I'm particularly pleased with the play of Maria Troche, especially since she's a freshman. She's had an excellent first round. Kelly Stout our senior has also done well. She had a bad front nine, but came back and had a great back nine. I was also pleased with Courtney Warr's play today. She had a couple bad holes, but overall she did very well for us today."
Stout shot a 79 (+7) and currently stands tied for 39th in the individual competition. Warr, a sophomore for the Bulldogs, is tied for 60th place after shooting an 80 (+10).
The second round of the Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate is slated to begin Monday at 8 a.m.
