Baseball Wins In 11 Innings At UAB, 8-3

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball team plated five runs in the top of the 11th inning to claim an 8-3 win at cross-town rival UAB Tuesday night.

Samford (6-2) was led by Michael Marseco, going 3-for-5 with four RBI. Louis Rojas went 4-for-5 with two RBI for the Bulldogs. Stephen Artz pitched 1.1 innings in relief to pick up the win for the Bulldogs. Joseph Edens pitched the final inning to earn his second save of the season.

For UAB (4-3), John Wayne Donahue, Billy Lichtner and Ryan Metcalf drove in a run each. Mitch Thorn took the loss for the Blazers, pitching 3.2 innings, giving up four runs on three hits.

With the game tied, 3-3, in the 11th inning, Samford took the lead when Drew Reagan singled to drive in Trey Moody. Luke Peavy walked with the bases loaded to drive in Bear Burnett for a 5-3 Samford lead. Marseco drove in the game's final three runs when he doubled down the left-field line to drive in Peavy, Matt Alling and Reagan to make the final score 8-3.

After UAB took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, Samford came back with a run in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 1-1. Rojas singled to drive in John Morgan for Samford's first run of the game.

UAB plated a run in the bottom of the third to retake the lead at 2-1. Samford, however, came back with two runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Marseco and Rojas drove in a run each in the inning. The Blazers scored a run seventh to tie the score at 3-3.

Samford and UAB will play again on Wednesday at Samford's Joe Lee Griffin Field. The game is set for a 6:00 p.m. start.
