GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The Samford University men's golf team is in second place following the second day of competition at the 37th annual Furman Intercollegiate, at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, N.C. The Bulldogs improved upon their first round score by three strokes to maintain their second-place position.
The Bulldogs shot a combined score of 291 in the second round after shooting a 294 in the first round on the 6800 yard course. After two rounds, Samford is tied with Tennessee-Chattanooga for second with a total score of 585. Maryland leads the team competition, with a combined score of 578, as the teams prepare to enter the final round of competition.
"We played really well today, we kind of hit a brick wall with three holes left to play," said Samford head coach Woodie Eubanks. "I'm happy we were able to play well and hold on to our place. My guys have played really well in this tournament, and I'm so happy to see that, especially as we get ready for the conference tournament. To be in the position we are in at a tournament as big as this is not only good for the guys, but its good for our program as a whole."
Samford's Ryan Mayberry and Bradley Pate each shot a one-under-par 71 on Saturday, while Reed Davis fired a 72 for par. Andrew Villarreal shot a 77 (+5) on Saturday, and Nathan Turner shot a 79 (+7). Mayberry and Davis are currently tied for 10th place, overall, with combined scores of 145 (+1). Pate is tied for 19th, with a 147 (+3), Turner is tied for 39th with a 151 (+7), and Villarreal is tied for 49th with a 152 (+8).
Maryland's Blaine Pefflex leads the individual field with a combined score of 139 (-5) through two rounds of play.
The final round of the 37th annual Furman Intercollegiate is set to tee off at 9:30 at the Furman University Golf Course. The Bulldogs will play with Maryland and Tennessee-Chattanooga. Results will be posted at www.furmanpaladins.com following the conclusion of the tournament.
