Tennis Wins Conference Opener Over Morehead State

March 3, 2006

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Samford University men's and women's tennis teams won their Ohio Valley Conference opener against the Morehead State Eagles on Friday at the Lakeshore Foundation. Both teams turned in sharp performances after inclement weather kept them from playing for three weeks.

The Samford women won 6-1 over Morehead State. The Bulldogs started out strong, claiming the doubles point, with wins on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. Katie McMiller and Anna Jackson won, 8-5, over Fernanda Chiaparini and Laura Ferreira on the No. 2 court, while Whitnie Warren and Christie Baker defeated Megan Sammons and Heather Butt, 8-2.

In singles play, the Bulldogs won five of the six points. Jackson won the No. 1 singles point, with 6-2, 6-1 victory over Weschenfelder. McMiller claimed the No. 2 point with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Chiaparini and Emily White won, 6-1, 6-0, over Ferreira on the No. 3 court. Warren claimed the No. 4 point, winning over Lobnitz, 6-1, 6-0, and Sarah McKey won, 6-3, 6-4, on the No. 5 court.

The men's team won 6-1. The Bulldogs claimed the doubles point to gain the early momentum in the match, before winning five of six matches.

"I was really happy with the intensity we showed today," said Samford head coach Kemper Baker. "We came out playing pretty well, considering we hadn't had a match in three weeks. Everyone played hard and showed a lot of intensity. Hopefully we can carry that into our match against EKU tomorrow."

Stuart Misner and Hank Grant won, 9-8, on the No. 2 doubles court, defeating Adam Storti and Peter Taylor. On the No. 3 court, James Bryce and Johnny Griffee won, 8-1, over Louis Orieux and Marty Dorcich.

On the No. 2 singles court, Grant defeated Taylor, 6-1, 0-6, 7-6, while Misner won on the No. 3 court, defeating Orieux, 6-2, 6-1. Renan Silveira won the No.4 point, 6-2, 6-3 over Damian Storti, and Griffee captured a thrilling 6-2, 6-7, 14-12 victory over Adam Storti on the No. 5 court. Brian Dushock won the No. 6 point with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Dorcich.
