BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Samford University softball team will begin play in its final home series of the 2006 campaign on Saturday as the Bulldogs host a doubleheader against the Morehead State Eagles beginning at 1 p.m., at Bulldog Field.
On Sunday, the teams will close out the three-game Ohio Valley Conference series with a single contest scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, Samford's three seniors Erin Hall, Emilee Lewis and Caroline Powell will be honored with a special "Senior Day" presentation.
Sunday's game can be heard locally on 91.1 FM, or via the Internet at either www.samfordsports.com or www.al.com/WVSU.
Samford (17-35, 7-13 OVC) heads into the weekend as the eighth-place team in the conference with six games remaining in the regular season. The Bulldogs are currently two-and-a-half games out of the sixth-and-final position in the upcoming OVC Tournament.
Only the top six teams in the final conference standings will qualify for the postseason event which will be held at the home stadium of the regular-season champion.
Morehead State (11-36, 1-20 OVC) enters Saturday's doubleheader with aspirations of snapping its five-game losing streak.
The Eagles have been defeated in 16 of their previous 17 matchups and have not won a conference game since a 6-2 victory over Eastern Illinois on March 25. Morehead State's most recent win came in a non-conference game versus Dayton on April 20.
Samford owns a 4-1 advantage in its all-time series against Morehead State.
The rivalry began during the 2004 campaign with the Bulldogs sweeping a three-game set in Birmingham, Ala., by scores of 8-6, 4-2 and 5-0. Last season, the teams split a two-game series held in Morehead, Ky. Samford dropped the first game, 7-1, but came back to win the second contest, 11-5.
The Samford University softball team has been victorious in three straight games at Bulldog Field and will put its home winning streak on the line against the Morehead State Eagles in a series-opening doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
