BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Following Samford's two practices on Monday, head coach Bill Gray announced the four captains for the 2006 season. Josh Brennard, Graham Lemmond, T.C. Myers and Freddy Young will serve the 2006 team as captains.
Brennard, a native of Brentwood, Tenn., has 48 receptions for 432 yards and 10 touchdowns in three seasons as the team's starter at tight end.
"Josh came here as a walk-on, just wanting an opportunity to play," Gray said. "He has done a tremendous job for us. He is a very good student and a good leader, and is a quality young man."
Lemmond, a native of Hayden, Ala., came to Samford as a defensive lineman, but made the switch to offensive line last season. In 2005, Lemmond started every game for the Bulldogs at center.
"Graham transferred here a couple of years ago and is playing a position he had never played before," Gray said. "He is about to start his second year at center. He is definitely the leader of our offensive line."
Myers, who hails from Pace, Fla., was selected in the spring to wear the Charles Williams Memorial Jersey. He started all 11 games last year at defensive back. In three seasons at Samford, he has 107 total tackles. He has also returned 22 kicks for an average of 23.2 yards per return.
"There is not a young man on our team that works harder than T.C. Myers," Gray said. "He is one of the few that will come out here and go until his body can't go any more. He received a high honor, being selected to wear the number five last spring, and now he has added pressure to make sure, emotionally he controls the team as a captain."
Young, a native of Homewood, Ala., has been a starter at wide receiver the entire time he has been at Samford. For his Samford career, Young has 79 receptions for 842 yards and two touchdowns.
"When Freddy came in as a freshman, we wanted to redshirt him, but he has been a starter ever since he got to campus," Gray said. "He has done a tremendous job for us at receiver, and is a quiet leader. His work ethic is what was noticed by his teammates, and they couldn't have picked a better guy to be a captain than Freddy.
"We had 15 young men who received votes from their teammates for captain," Gray said. "That shows that we have a lot of quality guys the players think a lot of."
The Bulldogs will practice again Tuesday afternoon. The practice is scheduled to begin at 3:45 p.m. at Seibert Stadium.
