BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Samford University soccer team was once again tabbed as the 10th-ranked team in the Southeast Region by Soccer Buzz Magazine on Tuesday. The Bulldogs earned the ranking for a third-consecutive week after defeating both Birmingham-Southern, 1-0, and Winthrop, 1-0, at the 2006 Barber's Classic.
Samford (5-1) played its first two matches at home this season and earned the championship title of the Barber's Classic. The Bulldogs' Cassie Applegate, Sara Geiger, Jamie Stout and Sharon Young were each named to the all-tournament team.
In the four-team event, Samford's goalkeeper Cayley Winters earned two straight shutout victories and the Bulldogs' defense only allowed a total of nine shot attempts in 180 minutes of play.
Florida State and North Carolina retained the top two spots in Tuesday's Southeast Rankings. Florida State has held onto the No. 1 ranking for a fourth-consecutive week and moved into second place all-time on the consecutive No. 1-ranking list.
Tuesday, Wake Forest jumped two spots to No. 3 in the weekly poll, while Duke and Florida each dropped a spot to No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
The rankings stayed the same from No. 6 to No. 11 as Auburn, Georgia, Miami, Clemson, Samford and UCF all held their ground.
At No. 12, NC State made the biggest improvement of the week by jumping three spots from No. 15. Closing out the top 15 were Charlotte, Kennesaw State and UNC Wilmington, respectively.
UNC Wilmington was the lone addition to the poll, while East Carolina dropped out. A total of 13 of the 18 teams receiving votes are from the states of North Carolina and Florida
The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday as the Bulldogs travel to Auburn, Ala., for a key non-conference matchup against the 21st-ranked Auburn Tigers at 7 p.m.
