The Samford University soccer team came up short in its bid to win its first match against a Big 12 opponent Sunday as the Bulldogs dropped a 1-0 decision to the Baylor Bears at the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.
Baylor (3-4-1) scored the game-winning goal during the 33rd minute of play. The Bears' Anna Schuch tallied the first-half goal after a centering pass from Betsy Kyle set her up with a one-on-one with the Bulldogs' Cayley Winters.
Samford (5-3) lost its second straight match and dropped to 3-3 when playing away from home this season.
The Bulldogs earned more corner kick attempts than Baylor, but were outshot 13-6.
Samford's Lauren Faubion led the team with three shot attempts, two of which were on goal. Faubion, a native of McKinney, Texas, played her first collegiate match back in her home state Sunday.
Winters, the Bulldogs' starting goalkeeper, made five saves in the contest. A sophomore, the two-time Ohio Valley Conference goalkeeper of the week, holds a 5-3 record in goal this season.
The Samford University soccer team will begin OVC play Friday as the Bulldogs travel to Cookeville, Tenn., for a matchup against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles. The OVC-opening contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
