Soccer To Host Morehead State In Battle Of OVC Unbeatens

Sept. 30, 2006

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford University soccer team will complete its two-match homestand Sunday at 2 p.m., against the Morehead State Eagles. The matchup features a pair of undefeated teams in Ohio Valley Conference play and will be held at the newly-renovated Bulldog Field.

Samford (7-3-1, 2-0-1 OVC) heads into the conference duel with a nine-match unbeaten steak versus league opponents. The Bulldogs have not been defeated in an OVC contest in nearly a year, dating back to a 1-0 loss against Murray State, Oct. 9, 2005.

Morehead State (4-6, 2-0 OVC) enters Sunday's matchup riding the positive momentum of a two-match winning streak.

After falling to Grand Valley State, 4-1, on Sept. 17, the Eagles have rattled off consecutive victories against OVC foes Eastern Kentucky, 2-1, and Jacksonville State, 1-0. Morehead State's Rebekah Kendall and Kelly Busch are currently tied for the team's lead in both goals (2) and points (4).

"I think that (head coach) Erin (Aubry) has done a great job at Morehead State," said Samford head coach Todd Yelton. "They are a very blue-collar team, just like we are, so I know that they will be very hard-working. They have some talented players for sure and it will be a challenging match for us."

So far this season, Samford has outscored its opponents, 17-9.

The Bulldogs' Heather Birdsell leads the squad with nine points and is tied for team lead with three goals. True freshman Amber Cress scored a pair of goals in Samford's 3-1 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Friday and moved into a tie with Birdsell for the team's lead in goals.

Samford currently owns a 3-0 advantage in its all-time series with Morehead State. The Bulldogs have not allowed a goal against the Eagles and have outscored Morehead State, 8-0.

Last season, Samford rallied for a 4-0 victory over the Eagles on the road in Morehead, Ky. The Bulldogs' Candace Clippard, Sharon Young and Rebecca Bohler all scored goals in the victory.

The Samford University soccer team will look to extend its undefeated streak against OVC opponents to 10-consecutive matches Sunday as the Bulldogs host the Morehead State Eagles at 2 p.m.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the matchup as Samford's 2005 OVC Championship team will be honored prior to the contest.
