BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Samford University basketball team will hold its annual Red-Blue Scrimmage on Saturday at 11 a.m., announced head coach Jimmy Tillette. The simulated game action is open to the public and free of charge.
The men's and women's basketball scrimmages will be the opening events of Saturday's 2007 Homecoming festivities and are expected to last until noon.
Samford's 2007 Red-Blue Scrimmage will be the Bulldogs' first public appearance of the season. Last year, Samford completed the 2006-07 campaign with a 16-16 overall record and advanced to the semifinal round of the OVC Tournament for the second straight year.
The 2007-08 Bulldogs were preseason picked to finish seventh in the OVC and include three returning starters from last season's team in Joe Ross Merritt, Travis Peterson and Curtis West.
Peterson, Samford's top returning scorer, was named to the Preseason All-OVC team last week.
Samford also welcomes a talented group of true freshmen in Josh Bedwell, Josh Davis and Matthew Friday to the team this season. They will be making their Bulldog debuts Saturday.
Samford's Homecoming athletic events begin Saturday at 10 a.m., with the women's basketball Red-Blue Scrimmage, followed by the men's competition at 11 a.m. The football team will then challenge the Austin Peay Governors at 2 p.m., in Seibert Stadium.
Following the football game, Samford's volleyball team will host Murray State at 6 p.m., in Seibert Hall.
