Women's Basketball Holds Annual Banquet

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford women's basketball team held its annual Team Banquet Friday night in the cafeteria on the Samford campus.

Eight individual awards were presented at the banquet. The Academic Award was given to Megan Wilderotter. Wilderotter has a 3.82 GPA in Exercise Science. The It Is Important Award went to Chelsee Insell. Tish Pilkerton received the Plays Hard Award.

For the second year in a row, Alex Munday won the Offensive Player Award, after leading the team with a 14.0 points per game average. Monica Maxwell received the Most Improved Award. Maxwell sat out the 2005-06 season with a shoulder injury, but came back in 2006-07 to play in 30 games and average 5.1 points per game.

The Assist Award was given to Taryn Towns, who led the team with 77 assists for the season. Wilderotter received the GREEN Award for fighting through adversity.

The Most Valuable Player Award was presented to Veronica Pike. Pike had her best season as a senior, averaging 11.0 points and a team-high 5.1 rebounds per game in her final season in a Samford uniform.

All letter winners on the team were also honored, and seniors Insell, Pike and Pilkerton were given the Senior Awards. Following the awards, the three seniors delivered their senior speeches, and a highlight film of the season was shown.

In the 2006-07 season, Samford posted 18 wins, the third-highest win total in the program's history, and reached the semifinals of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament for the second year in a row.
