Soccer Plays Host To The Citadel Sunday In Battle Of Bulldogs

Oct. 18, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford University soccer team will conclude its brief two-game Southern Conference homestand on Sunday at 2 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs welcome The Citadel Bulldogs to Bulldog Field for another key conference matchup.

"This is going to be another tough game for us," said Samford head coach Todd Yelton. "The Citadel has a very competitive team and (Head coach) Bob Winch has done a fantastic job with that program. They beat Georgia Southern a couple of games ago and we played a tight game against Georgia Southern, so I expect this to be a tough match."

Samford (5-8-2, 4-1-2 SoCon) heads into Sunday's contest looking to extend its home undefeated streak to 13-consecutive games. The Bulldogs have not been defeated at Bulldog Field since a 3-0 setback versus Auburn on Sept. 21, 2007.

On Friday, Samford earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory against the College of Charleston. In the shutout win, the Bulldogs' Leah Leppert scored the game-winning goal during the 77th minute of play.

Against the College of Charleston, Samford's 6-foot-3 freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Whitehead picked up her second straight shutout and extended her scoreless streak in goal to 400:53-consecutive minutes. She has played in nine of the Bulldogs' 14 games this season and owns a solid 1.45 goals-against average.

The Citadel (3-10-1, 1-6 SoCon) enters Sunday's matchup with aspirations of ending a two-game losing streak. After beating Georgia Southern 2-1 on Oct. 10, the Bulldogs have suffered shutout losses to both Davidson 7-0 and Chattanooga 2-0.

In its previous eight matches, The Citadel has gone 1-7 and has dropped games against USC Upstate 1-0, Western Carolina 6-0, Appalachian State 3-1, UNC Greensboro 5-0, Elon 2-0, Davidson 7-0 and Chattanooga 2-0. The Bulldogs have been outscored 26-3 in their last eight contests.

Sunday's match will be the first all-time meeting between Samford and The Citadel. With Samford's 1-0 victory against the College of Charleston on Friday, the Bulldogs improved their all-time record versus SoCon opponents to 11-2-4.

Following Sunday's game against The Citadel, the Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs travel to Boone, N.C., for a key matchup versus the Appalachian State Mountaineers. The game will be played at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
