The Samford University soccer team will play its first Southern Conference road game in school history Friday as the Bulldogs square off against the Davidson Wildcats at 6 p.m. (CT), in a pivotal conference matchup to be held at Alumni Stadium.
Samford (2-7-1, 1-0-1 SoCon) heads into Friday's contest riding the positive momentum of a two-match unbeaten streak. Last week, the Bulldogs opened conference play with a decisive 3-0 victory against Elon and a 0-0 draw with preseason-favorite UNC Greensboro.
Cayley Winters, Samford's starting goalkeeper, has not allowed a goal in the last 230:59 minutes and is ranked second in the SoCon in both goals-against average (0.76) and save percentage (.867). On Wednesday, the Bulldogs' Littleton, Colo., native was named the SoCon's Student-Athlete of the Week.
Davidson (4-2-3, 2-0 SoCon) enters Friday's game as the first-place team in the conference. The Wildcats are in the midst of a two-match winning streak and are coming off consecutive SoCon victories against Furman 3-2 and Wofford 1-0.
Freshman Stephanie Gerow and junior Kyri Bye-Nagel are tied for Davidson's team lead with three goals apiece. Nagel, the Wildcats' forward from Hanau, Germany, has also recorded an assist this season and leads Davidson with seven points.
Samford's team leader in goals is freshman forward Sarah Wilkinson. The Bulldogs' native of Euless, Texas, has scored two goals this season and tallied the game-winning score in Samford's 3-0 victory against Elon last week. Wilkinson also added an assist in the game and leads the Bulldogs with five points.
Friday's match will be the first all-time meeting between Samford and Davidson. With the Bulldogs' 1-0-1 performance last week, they improved their all-time record versus SoCon opponents to 8-1-3.
Following Samford's key matchup against Davidson on Friday, the Bulldogs will continue their SoCon road trip with another critical game versus Georgia Southern on Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT). The match will be played at Eagle Field in Statesboro, Ga.
