Baseball Falls At Kennesaw State Saturday, 6-3

MARIETTA, Ga. - The Samford baseball team dropped the second game of its three-game series at Kennesaw State, 6-3, Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, Samford drops to 0-2, while Kennesaw State improves to 2-0.

Samford's Michael Marseco was 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. John Morgan was also 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs. Marcus Rodriguez drove in a run in a 1-for-3 performance. David Knapp pitched 4.0 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and striking out five batters to take the loss for the Bulldogs.

KSU was led by Jacob Robbins, going 3-for-5 at the plate. Jay Morrow and Jace Whitmer had two hits and an RBI each for the Owls. Andrew Martin drove in two runs in a 1-for-3 performance. Justin Edwards pitched 3.0 innings in relief, surrendering no runs on five hits to earn the win on the mound.

Kennesaw State struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Ric Bishop led the inning off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 KSU lead.

Samford tied the score with a run in the top of the third inning. Marseco singled to left field to drive in Michael Johnson, who had walked earlier in the inning to even the score at 1-1.

KSU retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Martin grounded out to shortstop to drive in Whitmer for a 2-1 lead for the Owls.

Samford plated another run in the top of the fifth inning to tie the score at 2-2. After Morgan reached base on a bunt, Alex Godshall singled to left field. Godshall went to third base and Morgan scored on a KSU error to tie the score.

Kennesaw State added three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. Morrow, Whitmer and Jerome Wooley drove in a run each to give the Owls a three-run lead. The Owls then plated another run in the bottom of the seventh inning to up its lead to 6-2 when Martin Baker scored on a sacrifice fly by Martin.

Samford cut the lead to 6-3 with a run in the top of the eighth inning. Rodriguez singled down the left-field line to drive in Bear Burnett, who had walked earlier in the inning.

Samford and Kennesaw State will wrap up the three-game series with a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m. Central.
