Men's Tennis Takes Double-Header, Sweeps Austin Peay And Gadsden State

March 15, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford men's tennis team extended its win streak to five Saturday with a sweeping wins over conference foe Austin Peay and non-conference opponent Gadsden State. The Bulldogs improved to 7-4, 3-0 OVC, with 7-0 wins over both opponents.

The Bulldogs began the day with a conference match against the Governors at 11 a.m. at Samford's Pat M Courington Tennis Pavilion. Samford duo Hank Grant and Sam Huffman started things off in doubles with an 8-1 win at the No.1 court while Richard Walsh and Kelwin Dewet played their first match at the No. 2 spot but could not pull out the win. First time No. 3 duo Renan Silveira and Carl Abalos sealed the doubles point for the Bulldogs with an 8-2 with over Governor duo Wilkinson/Solarski.

Samford then walked away with a win at every singles court as the Bulldogs played a different lineup. Silveira won his second match at the No. 1 spot, while Huffman played and won his first No.2 match. Grant remains undefeated at the No. 3 court, Brian Dushock grabbed his first win at the No. 4 court, Oliver Reynolds won at the No. 5 court while Carl Abalos played his first singles match of the spring at the No. 6 court and walked away with a win.

Against the Cardinals of Gadsden State, it was almost déjà vu for the Bulldogs. In the late afternoon match, the Bulldogs took all three doubles matches with the same lineup to begin the latter half of Saturday's double-header. Then, the Samford men dominated the singles matches with a completely different lineup. Dushock started at the No.1 position, taking that match, 6-0, 6-1. Reynolds won at the No. 2 court, followed by Walsh, Abalos , Witcher and Rocke in the last four courts, respectively.

Next up for the Bulldog is another non-conference match-up against Mercer. The Bulldogs will host the Bears before going on a six-match road swing. The Bulldogs and Bears will meet up Saturday, March 22, at the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion at 1:30 p.m.
