Samford Women Travel To Western Carolina For Key SoCon Matchup

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford women's basketball team will travel to Cullowhee, N.C., to take on the Western Carolina Catamounts in a Southern Conference game Saturday afternoon.

Samford enters the game with a record of 10-3 overall and 5-1 in Southern Conference play after a 55-46 win at Georgia Southern on Jan. 5. The Bulldogs enter the game having won their last five conference games. Western Carolina is currently 8-6 overall and 4-2 in SoCon games after an 83-74 win at Furman on Jan. 5.

Samford is led in scoring by sophomore forward Savannah Hill, averaging 13.5 points per game. Sophomore guard Emily London is second on the squad in scoring, with an average of 11.3 points per game.

Hill is also the team's leading rebounder, pulling down 5.5 boards per contest. London ranks second in rebounding as well, with an average of 4.3 rebounds per game.

London is the team leader in assists, dishing out 2.8 assists per game. Senior guard Karmen Smith and Hill are tied for second on the team in assists with an average of 2.2 assists per contest.

Western Carolina is led by Emily Clarke, averaging 11.2 points per game. Brooke Johnson also averages 10.9 points, while Lauren Powell scores 10.1 points per game. Johnson is also the team's leading rebounder, pulling down 7.4 boards per contest.

Entering Saturday's game, Samford leads the Southern Conference in several statistical categories. The Bulldogs lead the league in scoring defense (53.1 ppg.), field goal percentage defense (36.5%), three-point field goal percentage defense (21.9%), turnover margin (+5.08) and assist/turnover ratio (1.0).

Individually, Samford players rank among conference leaders in a few statistical categories as well. Hill ranks fifth in the league in scoring (13.5 ppg.). London ranks fifth in three-point field goal percentage (42.4%) and in three-point field goals made per game (1.9 pg.), and junior guard Monica Maxwell is ranked third in three-point field goals made per game (2.1 pg.).

Saturday's game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. (CT) start from Western Carolina's Ramsey Regional Activity Center.
