Women's Hoops To Host Chattanooga In SoCon Opener Monday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford women's basketball team will play host to defending Southern Conference champion Chattanooga in the conference opener for both teams Monday evening at 7 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center.

Samford enters the game with a record of 5-1. The Bulldogs won two games over the weekend in the UAB Thanksgiving Classic, defeating North Texas, 67-53 and Norfolk State by a score of 70-33.

Chattanooga is currently 2-4 on the young season. The Lady Mocs hosted the DoubleTree Classic over the weekend. Chattanooga defeated Kennesaw State, 76-61 and fell to Villanova by a score of 64-59.

Monday night's game is a matchup of the top two teams in the SoCon from last season, as Chattanooga finished the regular season in first place, while Samford finished second. The Lady Mocs were 17-3 in the conference, while Samford posted a 16-4 league record.

Samford and Chattanooga are meeting for the eighth time, with Chattanooga having won all seven of the previous meetings. Last season, the Lady Mocs won the game in Chattanooga, 55-54, and they took the game in Birmingham by a score of 72-48.

Samford is led in scoring by junior forward Savannah Hill, scoring 14.7 points per game. Junior guard Emily London is averaging 12.7 points per game, and senior guard Monica Maxwell is scoring 10.3 points per game.

Hill, London and Maxwell are also the top three rebounders on the team. Hill averages 5.0 rebounds per game, London grabs 4.8 boards per contest and Maxwell averages 4.2 rebounds per game.

London leads the team in assists with 19 so far on the season. Senior guard Megan Wilderotter is second on the squad in assists, dishing out 14 through the first six games of the season.

Chattanooga is led by senior Shanara Hollinquest, averaging 20.7 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Senior Jenaya Wade-Fray is averaging 11.2 points per game for the Lady Mocs.
