BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Samford women's basketball team will travel to Starkville, Miss., to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs Monday evening at 7 p.m. at Humphrey Coliseum.
Samford enters the game with a record of 7-2 overall and 2-1 in Southern Conference play. Samford is coming off a 71-58 win over Wofford on Dec. 5.
Mississippi State currently has a record of 6-3 overall. MSU is coming off a 72-68 win at Louisiana Tech Saturday evening.
Samford is led in scoring and rebounding by junior guard Emily London, averaging 14.1 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. In the Bulldogs' 71-58 win over Wofford on Dec. 5, London led Samford with 20 points. London is also tied for second on the team in assists with 23 so far this season
Junior forward Savannah Hill is second in both scoring a rebounding, with averages of 13.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Hill leads the team in assists with 24 through the first nine games of the season.
Senior guard Monica Maxwell ranks third on the team in scoring (10.2 ppg.) and rebounding (4.4 rpg.). Senior guard Megan Wilderotter is tied with London for second on the team in assists with 23 on the season.
Mississippi State is led by Alexis Rack, averaging 20.6 points per game. Chanel Mokango leads MSU in rebounding, pulling down 7.9 boards per contest. Rack leads the team in assists, dishing out 39 so far this season.
Monday evening's game marks the first-ever meeting between Samford and Mississippi State in women's basketball. Samford has however, taken on Southeastern Conference teams 12 times before, holding a 2-10 record in those games. Samford has played the following SEC teams: Alabama (2-7), LSU (0-1), South Carolina (0-1) and Vanderbilt (0-1).
Samford leads the Southern Conference in several statistical categories. The Bulldogs lead the league in scoring defense (55.3 ppg.), scoring margin (+9.4 ppg.), free throw percentage (.774), three-point field goal percentage (.382), rebounding defense (32.2 rpg.), assist/turnover ratio (0.9) and three-point field goals per game (7.3 pg.).
Monday evening's game at Mississippi State will mark the first of five consecutive road games for Samford. The Bulldogs will not play in the friendly confines of the Pete Hanna Center again until their Jan. 2 game against Georgia Southern.
