BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Samford baseball team will play host to Auburn and Belmont in midweek games this week. Samford will take on Auburn Tuesday night at 6 p.m., and the Bulldogs will play Belmont Wednesday at 6 p.m. Both games will be played at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
After Tuesday night's game, Samford will hold its second-annual Diamond Dig, sponsored by Steed's Jewelers. Every woman in attendance at Tuesday's game will be given a spoon, and at the conclusion of the game, they will be able to dig for a diamond hidden somewhere in the infield.
Samford is currently 7-14 on the season after dropping three games to College of Charleston over the weekend. The Bulldogs fell in the three games by scores of 17-7, 12-3 and 9-7.
Auburn enters the game with a record of 15-8. Auburn was swept in a series against Arkansas over the weekend. The Tigers fell to the Razorbacks by scores of 3-2, 10-6 and 12-6.
Belmont enters the week with a record of 12-10 after losing two of three games at North Florida over the weekend. The Bruins also play Tuesday night against Tennessee Tech.
Samford has been led at the plate this season by Wayne Miller, batting .387 (36-for-93) with two home runs and 13 RBI. Mason Meredeth is batting .373 (31-for-83) with two home runs and 14 RBI. David Schulze leads the team in RBI with 24, while Trey Hayes is team's leading home-run hitter with four.
Samford is scheduled to start Josh Martin (0-2, 9.22 ERA) on the mound in Tuesday's game against Auburn. Kyle Putkonen (1-1, 13.50 ERA) will be Samford's starting pitcher in Wednesday's game against Belmont.
Trent Mummey, batting .407 with 10 home runs and 27 RBI had led Auburn at the plate so far this season. Ben Jones is batting .342 with four home runs and 22 RBI. Dexter Price (3-0, 3.86 ERA) is scheduled to start on the mound for Auburn.
Belmont has been led at the plate by Daniel Wagner, batting .384 with five home runs and 28 RBI. Brandon McCall is batting .382 with four home runs and 22 RBI. Belmont has not named a starting pitcher yet for Wednesday's contest.
