BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After opening its Southern Conference season with a 4-3 victory against Davidson on Saturday, the Samford men's tennis team fell short in earning its second-straight league victory Friday as the Bulldogs dropped a 6-1 decision to the 75th-ranked Elon Phoenix.

In the loss, Samford (2-8, 1-1 SoCon) true freshman Carson Kadi earned a 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 singles victory against the Phoenix's Carlin Murray on court No. 3. Kadi's win earned the Bulldogs' their lone point of Friday's SoCon matchup.

With the triumph, Elon (6-4, 1-0 SoCon) opened its 2009 conference season with a victory and extended its winning streak to three-consecutive matches. Prior to squaring off against the Bulldogs, the Phoenix tallied back-to-back 7-0 victories against both UNC Wilmington and Charlotte.

Elon earned Friday's doubles point and picked up wins in five of the six singles matches.

In doubles play, Samford's combination of Richard Walsh and Kadi rallied past the Phoenix's duo comprised of C. Stauffer McDowell and Alberto Rojas, 8-6. Walsh, the Bulldogs' native of Mobile, Ala., is the reigning SoCon Player of the Week.

The Samford University men's tennis team will next be in action Tuesday at 2 p.m., as the Bulldogs continue their nine-match homestand against the UNC Greensboro Spartans in a key SoCon matchup to be held at the Samford Tennis Center.
