BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Samford men's golf team will participate in the 2009 Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate this weekend as the second-annual event is being held Friday-Sunday at the Ironwood Golf and Country Club in Greenville, N.C. East Carolina will host the three-day competition.
The Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate will be played on the par 72, 7,102-yard Lee Trevino Signature Course.
Samford heads into this weekend's event after placing 12th in the 40th-annual Furman Intercollegiate held at the Furman University Golf Course on Sunday. The Bulldogs' senior Andrew Villarreal paced the team in the competition and fired a second-round score of 73 Sunday to finish the tournament with a 36-hole total of 149.
Villarreal's 73 was the Bulldogs' best round of the weekend as he earned an 11th-place finish in the individual standings.
Weather permitting; the first group of golfers in the 2009 Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate is scheduled to tee-off Friday and Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m. (CDT).
