ELON, N.C. -
The Samford women's tennis team's quest for a second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance came to end Friday as the Bulldogs were defeated by the College of Charleston Cougars, 4-0, in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference Tournament being held at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
With the loss, Samford concluded its season with an 8-13 overall record and a 4-6 mark in SoCon play. The second-seeded College of Charleston (22-4) advanced to the semifinals and will face either No. 3-seed UNC Greensboro or the sixth-seeded Elon Phoenix on Saturday at 9 a.m. (CDT).
Samford's lone victory Friday occurred in the No. 2 doubles contest where the Bulldogs' All-SoCon tandem of Jessica Diamond and Andrie Meiring defeated the Cougars' pair of Keely Mulligan and Kinsey Casey, 8-4.
With the win, Samford's combination of Diamond and Meiring improved its dual-match record in doubles play to 14-2 on the season. On Thursday, Diamond and Meiring were each honored with Second-Team All-SoCon doubles accolades.
Despite Diamond and Meiring's triumph, the College of Charleston claimed the doubles point and went on to earn its 4-0 victory with a trio of straight-set singles wins on courts No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6. In the No. 2 singles duel, the Bulldogs' Meiring won the first set against the Cougars' Holly Dowse, but play was suspended in the second frame once the overall match was clinched.
