MORGANTON, N.C. -
Junior Katelyn Stanier recorded the best score of the final round of play at the 2009 Mimosa Hills Women's Intercollegiate on Tuesday, as the Bulldogs' native of Newnan, Ga., carded an even-par 72 en route to leading the Samford women's golf team to a fifth-place finish in the two-day competition.
Stanier's second-round score of 72 on Tuesday was two strokes better than the remainder of the 52-person field. Elon's Danielle Mills, who held on to win the individual title of the tournament by one stroke over Augusta State's Julia Stalboro, fired a final-round score of 74.
Mills concluded the 36-hole competition with a final score of 148, while Stalboro followed closely at 149.
Samford's Stanier placed fourth in the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate with a two-day score of 151. The top-10 finish was Stanier's sixth in a row and her eighth during the 2008-09 campaign. So far this season, she has only finished outside the top 10 once in a total of nine tournaments.
The Bulldogs' Sara Hunt earned a 17th-place finish in the individual standings Tuesday. She carded a 79 in the second round of play and concluded the two-day competition with a final score of 160.
Samford's Heather Arnold turned in the team's third best score of the week at 164 (81-83), while Maria Troche followed with a 171 (88-83) and Sarah Butts added a 174 (86-88).
Amidst wintry conditions that included sporadic snow showers and a steady wind, Augusta State edged hard-charging Elon by one stroke, 611-to-612, to win the 2009 Mimosa Hills Women's Intercollegiate team championship. The 36-hole, two-day competition was held at the par 72, 5,869-yard Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club.
The Jaguars held a 12-stroke advantage over the Phoenix entering Tuesday's final round after shooting a nine-over 297 on Monday. However, Elon, aided by a pair of two-over 74s from Mills and Tara McFadden, trimmed 11 strokes off Augusta State's lead with a 303 over the final 18.
The Samford women's golf team will next be in action April 19-21 as the Bulldogs compete in the 2009 Southern Conference Championship to be held in Etowah, N.C.
