The Samford baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision in the second game of its three-game Southern Conference series at The Citadel Saturday afternoon at Riley Park.
With the loss, Samford drops to 17-30 overall and 9-17 in SoCon play. The Citadel is now 26-18 overall and 13-10 in league play.
Samford was led at the plate by Wayne Miller, going 3-for-5 with an RBI. David Schulze was 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs. David Knapp pitched 6.2 innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on nine hits and striking out five batters to take the loss and drop his season record to 3-5.
For The Citadel, Chris McGuiness went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Nick Orvin and Matt Simonelli had two hits each for The Citadel. Matt Talley pitched 6.0 innings in relief, giving up no runs on six hits to earn the win and improve his record to 6-1.
The Citadel plated two runs in the first inning and another in the second to take an early 3-0 lead. In the first inning, Orvin led the inning off by reaching base on a Samford error. With one out in the inning, Sonny Meade and Richard Jones drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. McGuiness then singled to drive in Orvin and Meade for a 2-0 Citadel lead.
In the second inning, Orvin singled with one out in the inning. With two outs, Meade doubled to drive in Orvin to make the score 3-0.
Samford came back with a run in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 3-1. Michael Johnson walked to lead off the inning. After moving to second base on a ground out, Johnson scored on a single by Miller for Samford's lone run of the game.
The Citadel put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the score 5-1. With one out in the inning, Jones hit a double to center field. McGuiness then singled to drive in Jones for a three-run Citadel lead.
With two outs and no one on base, Simonelli doubled and then scored on a double by David Greene for the game's final run.
