The Samford women's basketball team will play its first of two Southeastern Conference opponents in a game at 20th-ranked Vanderbilt Thursday night at Memorial Gymnasium.
Samford enters the game with a record of 0-1 after a 58-42 loss at Texas Tech Monday evening.
In the season-opening loss, Samford was led by senior guard Emily London with 13 points and six rebounds. Junior guard Jazmine Powers had six points and five rebounds, while senior forward Savannah Hill added five points, six rebounds and four assists. Junior Alex Crow led the team in rebounding with seven.
Vanderbilt is currently 1-0 on the young season. The Commodores opened their season with an 80-55 win over Howard on Sunday.
The Commodores were led in their season-opener by Stephanie Holzer with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Christina Foggie scored 14 points. Jasmine Lister added 13 points and six rebounds, while Angela Puleo scored 11 points for the Commodores.
Samford and Vanderbilt are meeting for just the second time, with the Commodores holding a 1-0 advantage in the series. The teams last met on Nov. 28, 2003, as part of the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament. The Commodores defeated the Bulldogs by a score of 67-50.
Samford has an all-time record of 3-11 against teams from the Southeastern Conference. The Bulldogs have two games this season against SEC foes, including a game against Ole Miss on Dec. 29 in a tournament at Saint Peter's in Jersey City, N.J. Samford's record against the members of the SEC is: Alabama (2-7), LSU (0-1), Mississippi State (0-1), Ole Miss (1-0), South Carolina (0-1) and Vanderbilt (0-1).
The game will mark Samford's first game against a ranked opponent since Dec. 28, 2009, when the Bulldogs played at Virginia. The Bulldogs dropped a hard-fought contest to the Cavaliers, 69-60, in the Marriott Cavalier Classic. Samford has never defeated a ranked opponent.
