The Samford women's basketball team will travel to Jersey City, N.J., to take part in the Saint Peter's College Holiday Classic on Wednesday and Thursday.
Samford will open the tournament against Ole Miss Wednesday at 4 p.m. (CT). Following the Samford-Ole Miss game, Saint Peter's will take on Central Connecticut State. The consolation game is scheduled for Thursday at 4 p.m. (CT), with the championship game to follow at 6:30 p.m. (CT).
Samford and Ole Miss will be meeting for just the second time. The only previous meeting came in the first round of the WNIT last season, with Samford winning, 66-65, in the Pete Hanna Center. Samford has never met Saint Peter's or Central Connecticut State.
Samford enters the tournament with a record of 7-3. The Bulldogs are coming off a 67-66 loss at Georgia Southern on Dec. 20. Prior to the Georgia Southern loss, Samford had won seven games in a row.
The Bulldogs are led in scoring by senior guard Emily London, averaging 14.2 points per game. London also ranks second on the team in assists with 34 and third in rebounding, averaging 3.7 rebounds per game. For her career, London ranks second in Samford history in scoring with 1,367 points. The school record is 1,603 set by Alex Munday (2003-06).
Senior forward Savannah Hill leads the Bulldogs in rebounding (5.1 rpg.) and assists (38). Hill also ranks second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.3 points per game. Hill ranks third in school history in scoring with 1,257 career points.
Juniors Ruth Ketcham (8.5 ppg.) and Paige Anderson (7.9 ppg.) rank third and fourth on the squad in scoring, respectively.
Ole Miss is currently 7-5 on the young season. The Rebels are coming off an 82-46 loss to Miami on Dec. 21.
Ole Miss is led in scoring by Kayla Melson, averaging 14.3 points per game. Valencia McFarland is currently averaging 11.5 points per game for the Rebels. Pa'Sonna Hope is the team's leading rebounder, pulling down 7.0 rebounds per game. Nikki Byrd averages 6.5 boards per contest. Melson also leads Ole Miss in assists with 62. McFarland is second in assists with 45 so far this season.
Central Connecticut State has a record of 6-3 entering the tournament. The Blue Devils are coming off a 51-46 loss at Fairleigh Dickinson on Dec. 22.
Central Connecticut State is led in scoring by Kerrianne Dugan, scoring 12.0 points per game. Justina Udenze is second in scoring with an average of 8.3 points per game. Leanne Crockett is CCSU's leader in rebounding, grabbing 8.7 rebounds per game. Udenze is second on the team in rebounding, with an average of 7.3 boards per game. Dugan leads the Blue Devils in assists with 19 so far this season. Alexzandria Dowdy ranks second on the squad in assists with 18.
Saint Peter's enters the tournament with a record of 0-9 so far this season. The Peahens are coming off a 74-64 loss to Wagner College on Dec. 21.
Saint Peter's College is led in scoring by Jynae Judson, averaging 13.6 points per game. Lynea Blue is averaging 12.0 points per game for the Peahens. Judson is also the team's leader in rebounding with an average of 7.1 rebounds per game. Charlene Riddick pulls down 6.4 rebounds per contest. Aziza May leads Saint Peter's in assists with 32 so far this season. Teresa Manigrasso has dished out 13 assists so far this season.
