Baseball To Host Jacksonville State Tuesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball team will play host to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

Samford enters the weekend with a record of 9-6 overall and 2-1 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs won two of three games at College of Charleston over the weekend. Samford won the series-opener on Friday, 20-13, before dropping game two, 14-4. The Bulldogs won the series with an 18-4 win on Sunday.

In the series at Charleston, David Schulze batted .733 with two doubles, three home runs and nine RBI. Schulze was named the SoCon's Player of the Week for his efforts.

For the season, Bo Smith is Samford's leading hitter with a .404 batting average. Schulze leads the team in home runs with five.

Samford is scheduled to start freshman right-handed pitcher Arthur Strauss on the mound. Strauss enters the week with a record of 0-2 and an ERA of 9.39.

Jacksonville State is currently 6-9 on the season. The Gamecocks won two of three from Eastern Michigan over the weekend. Andrew Edge leads JSU with a .412 batting average with five home runs and 25 RBI. Sam Eberle also has five home runs for the Gamecocks.

The Gamecocks will start right-hander Malcolm Thomas on the mound. Thomas has a record of 0-1 with an 8.71 ERA entering Tuesday night's game.

Samford and Jacksonville State will be meeting for the 63rd time in baseball. The Gamecocks hold a 45-17 advantage in the series. Jacksonville State won both meetings last season.
