DAVIDSON, N.C. -
The Samford baseball team will travel to Davidson for a three-game Southern Conference series Thursday through Saturday. The teams will play Thursday at 6 p.m. (CT), Friday at 5 p.m. (CT) and Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT).
The Bulldogs enter the weekend with a record of 14-10 overall and 5-1 in Southern Conference play after sweeping a three-game SoCon series from Furman last weekend. The Bulldogs' 5-1 SoCon record places them in second place in the league standings behind The Citadel.
Samford is led at the plate by David Schulze, batting .356 with seven home runs and 27 RBI. Bo Smith is batting .341, while Mason Meredeth is batting .337 with four home runs and 22 RBI. Wayne Miller has a .324 average with five home runs and 18 RBI.
Samford is scheduled to start Jonathan Stephens (4-0, 5.40 ERA) on the mound in game one of the series. Kyle Putkonen (3-1, 7.04 ERA) will pitch in game two, and Josh Martin (1-3, 6.17 ERA) is scheduled to start game three on the mound for the Bulldogs.
The Wildcats are currently 13-12 overall and 4-6 in Southern Conference play after dropping a midweek conference game at UNC Greensboro by a score of 6-5 Tuesday evening. Davidson stands in sixth place in the current SoCon standings.
Davidson is led at the plate by Danny Weiss, batting .419 with five home runs and 27 RBI. Drew Gadaire has an average of .364 with 20 RBI. Sam Payne leads the team in RBI with 28.
Davidson will start Ian Horkley (2-1, 5.72 ERA) in Thursday's series-opener. Ryan Overcash (4-0, 3.09 ERA) will start for the Wildcats in game two, and Thomas Middour (1-1, 5.26 ERA) is scheduled to start the series finale on Saturday.
Samford and Davidson have met four previous times, with the series tied, 2-2. Last season, Davidson won two of the three meetings. Samford took game one, 6-4, before Davidson came back to win games two and three by scores of 10-9 and 4-1. The programs first met on Mar. 4, 1999, with Samford winning, 10-5 in Birmingham. This weekend's series will mark the first time Samford has played at Davidson.
