The second-seeded Samford women's basketball team will take on the 10th-seeded Elon Phoenix in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament Friday at 8 a.m. (CST) at Bojangles Coliseum.
Elon advanced to the quarterfinals with a 67-53 win over seventh-seeded Wofford on Thursday. Samford, as the No. 2 seed in the tournament, earned a first-round bye.
Samford is currently 20-9 overall, and the Bulldogs posted a 14-6 record in SoCon games. Samford last played on Feb. 27, when the Bulldogs ended their regular season with a 92-62 loss at regular-season champion and top-seeded Chattanooga.
The Bulldogs are led in scoring by junior All-Conference guard Emily London, averaging 15.0 points per game. London currently ranks third in the SoCon in scoring. London also ranks second in the nation in three-point field goal percentage, making 49.2 percent of her attempts.
Junior forward Savannah Hill, who was also named All-Conference, leads Samford in rebounding (5.1 rpg.) and assists (3.3 apg.). Hill is second on the squad in scoring with an average of 13.3 points per game. Senior guard Monica Maxwell is third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.0 points per game. Maxwell is also second on the team in rebounding, pulling down 4.5 boards per contest.
Elon is currently 12-18 overall after the win over Wofford. The Phoenix posted a record of 6-14 in Southern Conference play this season.
Elon is led in scoring by SoCon Freshman of the Year Ali Ford, averaging 16.2 points per game. Urysla Cotton leads the Phoenix in rebounding, pulling down 7.7 boards per contest.
Samford and Elon are meeting for the fifth time, with Samford holding a 3-1 advantage in the series. The teams split the regular-season series this year, with each team winning on the road. Samford won the first meeting at Elon, 72-63, on Dec. 19. Elon returned the favor by winning at Samford by a score of 60-59 on Feb. 1.
Entering the SoCon Tournament, Samford leads the Southern Conference in several statistical categories. The Bulldogs currently lead the league in scoring margin (+5.8 ppg.), free throw percentage (.756), three-point field goal percentage (.364), rebounding defense (33.9 rpg.), assist/turnover ratio (1.0) and three-pointers made per game (8.2 pg.).
The winner of Friday's game between Samford and Elon will play in the tournament semifinals Sunday at 1:30 p.m. (CST). The Samford-Elon winner will play the winner of the game between third-seeded Appalachian State and either No. 6 Davidson or No. 11 Furman.
