SPARTANBURG, S.C. ---- Samford's Cameron Bean, Patrick Wells and Hillary Neal have all been named Southern Conference Track and Field Athletes of the Week for all meets March 26-27. The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.
This is the second time in this track and field season that the Bulldogs have dominated the awards. During the indoor season in February, Samford swept the women's awards as Neal won the track honor and Laura Bedsole won the field honor. Wells was also honored in February as the Field Athlete of the Week.
Bean, a redshirt senior from Soddy Daisy, Tenn., earned the men's Track Athlete of the Week award. He finished second in the 5000 meters at the Alabama Relays last weekend. His time of 14:29.33 was an outdoor personal best and currently leads the conference. The mark also set a school record.
Wells, a junior from Hoover, Ala., was named men's Field Athlete of the Week. Wells took first place in the pole vault at the Alabama Relays with a vault of 16' 6.75". It marked the second consecutive time he won the event at the Alabama Relays. He is currently tied for the conference lead with teammate Michael Seaman.
Seaman, a sophomore from Bardstown, Ky., was also nominated for the field honor. Seaman took second place in the pole vault with a personal best vault of 16' 6.75".
Neal, a junior from Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., earned the women's Track Athlete of the Week honor. She took second place in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:33.16 at the Alabama Relays. She also ran the mile leg of the distance medley relay, registering a time of 4:50. The Bulldogs took second place in the event.
Samford is back in action this Friday and Saturday as the team splits to compete in the Florida Relays and Auburn Tiger Track Classic.
