BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball team will wrap up its 2010 regular season with a pivotal three-game Southern Conference series at Elon, Wednesday through Friday.

The teams will open the series Wednesday at 6 p.m. (CT). There will also be a game Thursday at 3 p.m. and Friday at 12 p.m.

Entering the week, Samford stands in fifth place in the league standings at 16-10, just a half game behind Elon at 17-10. The Southern Conference Tournament will be held May 26-30 in Charleston, S.C.

If Samford wins two-of-three games this weekend, the Bulldogs would be the fourth seed in the league tournament and the Phoenix would earn the fifth seed. If Elon wins two-of-three, Samford would be the No. 5 seed and Elon would be the No. 4 seed. If either team sweeps the series and The Citadel sweeps Georgia Southern, that team would move into the No. 3 seed, with Georgia Southern at No. 4 and the Samford/Elon loser at No. 5.

The Bulldogs enter the week with a record of 29-21 overall. Last weekend, Samford took two of three games from Western Carolina. Samford won games one and three by scores of 7-6 and 8-5, with Western Carolina winning the middle game, 8-1.

The Samford lineup features six players batting over .320, including Mason Meredeth with a .364 average with 11 home runs and 49 RBI. Trey Hayes is batting .356 with seven home runs and 37 RBI. Wayne Miller is batting .352 with eight home runs and 38 RBI.

The Phoenix is currently 34-19 overall after taking last weekend off. In its last SoCon series, Elon swept Appalachian State by scores of 5-4, 6-1 and 13-3,

Elon is led at the plate by Neal Pritchard, batting .358 with 10 home runs and 41 RBI. Mike Melillo has a .321 average with nine home runs and 50 RBI. Matt Hinson leads the team in home runs with 16 so far this season.

Samford and Elon have met three previous times, with all three meetings coming in last season's Southern Conference series at Joe Lee Griffin Field. Elon swept the series, winning the three games by scores of 11-8, 12-7 and 12-9.

All three games can be heard locally on WVSU-FM 91.1, or worldwide on the internet at www.samford.edu/wvsu. Fans can also follow the games online via GameTracker on Samford's official athletics website, www.samfordsports.com.
