Football Prepares For Saturday Scrimmage

Aug. 20, 2010

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford football team practiced for about an hour and a half Friday morning in shells at Seibert Stadium. The workout was the Bulldogs' final tune-up for the team's second scrimmage of the preseason, scheduled for Saturday morning at Seibert Stadium.

Samford head coach Pat Sullivan said he looked for improvement from his team from the first scrimmage, which was held last Saturday.

"The first scrimmage is never polished," Sullivan said. "And now that we've been in camp a little longer, hopefully it will be more polished tomorrow on both sides of the ball."

Sullivan said the team will try to cover all game-type situations during the scrimmage.

"We will try to expand our work on the kicking game a little bit," Sullivan said. "We'll try to cover all situations, offensively and defensively. It's a big scrimmage for us. It is probably the last scrimmage we'll have before Florida State, other than our mock scrimmage."

Sullivan added he has seen a lot of improvement in the team since the Bulldogs started practice on Aug. 9.

"I think our running backs and wide receivers on offense have improved," Sullivan said. "I've been pleased with the quarterbacks. They're not there yet, but they are getting better.

"Defensively, our line has really gotten better and we've gotten some more depth," Sullivan said. "Nick Williams has had a good camp and that is great to see. We're getting a little depth at linebacker as well."

Saturday's scrimmage is scheduled to kickoff at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at Seibert Stadium. The Bulldogs will then take Sunday off from practice before returning with two practices on Monday.

Samford opens the 2010 season on Sept. 4, when the Bulldogs play at Florida State. The game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. (CT) start and will be televised live on ESPNU.
