The Samford University women's golf team carded an 18-hole score of 311 on Friday on the opening day of the 2010 Sea Trail Women's Intercollegiate being hosted by Elon University. With its performance, Samford sits in third place in the prestigious 10-team tournament.
Elon's Tara McFadden and Diana Davis each carded a one-over 73 to sit in a tie for first place, helping lead Elon to a two-stroke advantage with a score of 299 after the first round of play at the Sea Trail Women's Intercollegiate.
Appalachian State sits in second place with a score of 301 while Samford and Jacksonville are tired at third (311) and Old Dominion sits in fifth (320).
Elon's Virginia Mayer and Martyna Mierzwa each sit in the top 15 for the Phoenix. Mayer posted a 76 and is tied for ninth while Mierzwa is tied at 12th after shooting a 77. Shannon Prunty sits tied for 24th after recording an 80. As individuals, Meghan Green is tied at 29th with an 81 while Lauren Lebak posted an 84 to sit tied for 38th.
The Mountaineers' top-three finishers - Yue Xu, Rumbidzai Masamvu and Kristina Boo - are all tied for fourth after carding a 75. Keri Dice sits tied for ninth with a score of 76.
True freshman Alex Jasper shot an opening-round 77 and is tied for 12th place to lead Samford. The Bulldogs' Kayla Turner, Sarah Butts and Anna Heim each recorded scores of 78 to sit tied for 16th.
Old Dominion's Samantha Morrell is tied for third place after carding a 74. Yanessa Adarme of Bethune-Cookman and Jacksonville's Morgan Jackson sit tied with Xu, Masamvu and Boo for fourth after posting a 75. Hampton's Kala Williams is tied with Mayer and Dice at the ninth spot with a 76.
The Sea Trail Women's Intercollegiate will continue with the second round on Saturday beginning at 8:15 a.m. (CDT).
