BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Samford Baseball team hosted its inaugural Baseball 101 for Women on Sunday, Nov. 13. Over 40 ladies participated in the clinic, which was held as a fundraiser for the baseball program. The baseball team raised $250 during the event.
Senior pitcher Josh Martin organized the fundraiser.
"We were nervous about how it would turn out since it was our first time doing it, but we had a great turnout," Martin said. "Things moved smoothly and everybody seemed to have a great time. It's always fun for us when we can teach people about our sport and hopefully grow their interest."
The participants took part in five different sessions including pitching, hitting, throwing/catching, ground balls and Q&A/baseball lingo.
The ladies were able to test their skills in the bullpen and were actually able to see how fast they can throw. The Bulldogs players assisted the ladies on how to field ground balls and also worked with them in the outfield on basic throwing and catching.
Former Samford and current minor league baseball players Grant Sides and Andrew Jones hosted a Q&A session. Sides and Jones quizzed the ladies on their knowledge of baseball terminology.
After the participants completed the sessions, the baseball players and ladies played a pick-up game to showcase the skills they learned during the clinic.
"The baseball fundraiser was such a blast," participant Adair Osman said. "I thought it was a great way to raise money. The stations were very helpful and fun. I liked that the players were right there to help with the fundamentals and answer any questions we had. The game was my favorite because we got to use the skills we learned and compete against the other groups."
The evening concluded with the baseball team grilling hamburgers and hotdogs.
"This was our first baseball camp like this and we had a great turnout," sophomore pitcher C.K. Irby said. "I think everyone involved had a great time."
